Ok, I've heard enough, I'm ready to get started

I’m a teacher and want to design an album for my school. Where do I start?

It’s quick and easy to get your school’s CD ready for production. To start with you will need to choose a design to personalise. There are currently five designs to pick from. On some designs you are able to edit the text and on others you can edit the text and upload a photo or picture. These photos can be of your school concert or even the school emblem for example. Once you have found a design you like the look of, click on the image of the design in the centre of the screen. You will be taken to the next page where you can begin to personalise your album.

I’ve found a design I like, what can I edit?

As you enter onto the next page of MixPixie, you will be guided through the editing stage where you can change various aspects of the album. Using the sections just above the album cover image ("Album Cover", "Message", "Inner Cover" and "Songs") you are able to edit as you go along.

How do I upload my photo or picture?

If you choose an artwork template which has the option to upload photos or pictures, when personalising your album, you will see a box marked ‘Your image here’ where your photo or picture will be positioned on the CD packaging. On the right hand side you will see a blue "Select" box where you can locate the photo that you want to use that’s stored on your computer. Click on the photo file you want and the upload will happen automatically and the photo or picture will load into the album artwork. Use the corner boxes surrounding the uploaded photo to zoom in or out, and the slider bar at the side of the design template to rotate your image until you have it looking the way you want it to.

How many photos can I upload per CD?

The number of photos you can upload will vary from design to design. You can check how many photos/pictures can be uploaded by checking each design. The areas where you might be able to upload a photo are usually positioned on the front cover or inside left/ right sleeves. The number of photos you can upload will vary from design to design and can be learnt by looking at the bottom right of 3D image of the design. If there is an icon with "Upload 1 Photo" or "Upload 2 Photos", you can upload the respective amounts. If there is no icon on the image there is no photo upload option on this design.

What file type, resolution or size should my photos or pictures be?

If you are uploading a photo or pictures, the images must be in JPEG format. Any other format such as Word documents and PDFs cannot be accepted. For best results, we advise that you make the image dimensions approximately 1,000 pixels for the smallest edge of your photos. We print images at 300DPI (Dots Per Inch), so if you are scanning the image we recommend you use this setting. If you try to upload a photo that has a lower resolution or image size, we will accept it. However, an on-screen warning will appear to let you know that the image might not print very well.
Always select photos which are as high quality as possible. Small photos and low file resolution files are likely to produce poor quality prints. Although MixPixie has the highest technology and cutting-edge machines, we can’t turn poor quality images into award-winning photographs!

What happens to my photos after my CD has been printed?

When you upload a photo to MixPixie, it is stored on our secure server. As soon as your order has been dispatched, your photo is deleted from the Pixie files.

How many songs can I have on my CD?

There is no limit to the number of tracks you can have on your CD, however the total number of tracks must not be over 80 minutes in length (including the gaps between the songs). You can choose any number of songs to upload from just one to ten or more!

How do I upload my school concert recordings?

Using our step by step upload tool you can easily import the files you want to put on your school CD. You will be asked to find the song file on your computer, confirm the track details and importantly match the song name to that from the Song Database on the website so that the publishers of those songs are correctly credited.

What file type should my recordings be?

Your school songs should be in MP3 format to use the upload tool. The size of the file and your internet connection speed will determine how long the upload process lasts. If you don’t have your school recordings in MP3 format, WAV and other file types can easily be converted into MP3 format with a number of free software programs such as iTunes). The higher quality recordings you have the better they will sound on the CD!

Hold on! I don’t know how to record my school songs!

If you need help recording your concerts or events, MixPixie can organise top of the range recording equipment for you to hire. Depending on the size of the choir or band there are a number of options to suit the occasion. Please see below to find the right package to suit you and your school:

  • Option 1 - £150: Entry Level Package for a small group: Stereo Mic Kit with Recorder. All you have to do is point the microphone towards the choir or group, press the Record button and sing. The equipment will be couriered directly to the school and collection will also be arranged. This price also includes mastering of the recording by the engineers at their studio to ensure the best possible results. The audio files (songs) will then be returned back to the school ready to upload on the website. However please note, for sound quality reasons, this package is not compatible with recordings using backing tracks.
  • Option 2 - £250: Medium sized groups with specific solo voices: Stereo Mic Kit with recorder and four microphones, suitable for solos, acoustic guitars and pianos etc. This package has the same equipment as the Entry Level Package but with additional microphones for larger groups with solo voices. The price includes courier costs and engineer mastering and delivery of the final audio files back to the school.
  • Option 3 - £550: For larger choirs or groups with instruments and additional musicians. This package includes a mixing desk and multi-track system with an engineer to attend and record the event or concert. Ideally suitable for choirs with bands, this allows the sound engineer to set up and use all the recording equipment to capture the recording. This includes courier costs and engineer mastering and delivery of the final audio back to the school.
  • Option 4 - £1500: Full mobile outside broadcast studio for large performances. This offers a full mobile studio onsite where an engineer will attend, set up and record the event or concert. This is ideal for any size group for a multi-track recording. The price includes courier costs, engineer mastering and delivery of the final audio back to the school

For more information on these options please contact our Customer Services team via email on support@mixpixie.com or phone: 020 7228 8486.

I’ve got my school recordings. Let’s get uploading!

You must first choose the file you want from your computer by pressing the "Select" button on the upload page. Once you have chosen your file you must then state whether this is a song from the Sing Up Song Bank or not. This will not only enter the song details onto your CD but it will also help MixPixie allocate the correct payments to the publishers (at no extra cost to you).

Screenshot of audio upload

If the recording you have chosen is based on a Sing Up song then select the "Yes" option and press "Next" to upload your file. You will be taken through to the song information page where you will be asked to best match the name of the recording to that from the Song Database to help with the track classification and our royalty system:

Once you have found the name of the song which best matches that of your school recording, click on the title. The name of the song will be taken through to the "Recording Title" entry box beneath which will be the song name which appears on the actual album. This name can be edited if needs be.

Next to it, you will be asked to enter the names of the choir, group or singer in "Performer Names", which will also appear on the album after the song title. Once you are happy with the information you have entered in these fields press "Upload" to import your file.

What if my song is not from the Sing Up Song Bank?

If the school recording you have chosen is not based on a song from the Sing Up Song Bank, but another source, press "No" before clicking "Next" to head to the next page. Here will you be taken through to a catalogue of over 10 million songs! Simply enter the name of the song you have recorded and press "Search". Looking at the search results find a version that matches your arrangement the closest, by looking at the name of the artist (if you’re unable to find one don’t worry too much just select one that matches the song name).

Can I change the order of my songs?

I’m happy with my design and I have uploaded all the songs I want, what next?

Once you have clicked on "Complete Your CD", you will be asked to give the album you are making a name. This album title will be how parents and fellow teachers can distinguish between this and any other school album you have made (we suggest naming after the performance or concert).

How do I set the album price?

On this same page you will be asked to set the retail price of your album. This is the price that parents, for example, will pay when they purchase copies of the album that you have designed. When you set your album sale price you will also determine how much your school will earn for every CD sold: the royalty. There are three options for you to choose from, listed below:

Retail price and royalty information
Retail Price Royalty to School
£9.99 £3.00
£11.99 £5.00
£12.99 £6.00

How does my school get paid?

For each and every school CD that is sold, MixPixie will keep track of the royalties earned. Each month, MixPixie will tally these royalties and send an email to the contact for the school. The school will need to arrange to send an invoice back to MixPixie who will arrange for payment to be made and received within 30 days.

Once I have finished my album and set the price, is it ready to sell?

In order to ensure quality and to carry out publishing credit checks, there will be a short delay between you finishing your album and it being ready for sale. As soon as it is ready, MixPixie will send you an email with the direct website link where your CDs can be bought from. You can forward part of that email on to potential customers! On average, this will happen within 2 working days.

Can I check my school’s CD sales?

Every month from when your album goes on sale, MixPixie will email the contact for the school a detailed account of the sales in that period.

I’m a parent and want to buy my school’s CD. Where do I go?

If your school has already made a CD and you would like to buy one simply go to "Find Your School’s CD" at the top of the page or in the centre of the homepage or by clicking here. This will take you through to a menu where you can search for your school and follow the instructions to place your order and await your delivery:

General despatch information

Please note:

It sounds simple, but many people forget to add it! Our delivery system at Sing Up/MixPixie is really simple: we work really closely with The Royal Mail to make sure that we get your order to you as soon as possible. The delivery costs are:

  • £2.99 for UK
  • £2.99 for Europe
  • £3.99 for international orders outside Europe
What is the CD packaging?

Each CD is made individually at Sing Up/MixPixie. We want the recipient of your CD to be amazed at your school album. Our packaging has therefore been carefully crafted so that there is a real ‘WOW’ factor, when the recipient opens it. The CDs are boxed in 265 gsm boxboard in a packaging format known as a digipack. The thick card is cut, folded and glued from this recyclable material as well as covered in a high-gloss so that it will look as perfect as the day they received it for many years to come. We don’t use plastic jewel cases which most CDs are made in, as there’s nothing more disappointing than receiving a CD in a cracked or scratched plastic case, plus they’re not very good for the environment.

How do the songwriters and musicians get paid for the songs I choose?

When you upload your school recordings, you are stating that your school owns the copyright to those sound recordings i.e. they are not sung by professional artists and musicians. Every song in the Sing Up/MixPixie Song Bank is registered to a publishing company. Each time you choose a song on your album, we take a note of this and make sure that the people behind that song (i.e. the composer or songwriter.) get the royalties they are owed. Sing Up/MixPixie fully supports all musicians, music companies and the official governing bodies of the music industry.
